International Data Protection Solution
Spirion’s flagship product, Sensitive Data Manager, is the leader in data discovery, persistent classification, and protection of sensitive data on-premise and in the cloud. Spirion’s data discovery capabilities, combined with the ability to help organizations comply with challenging data privacy regulations, led it to stand out among other entries in the International Data Protection Solution category.
“Our customers report that Spirion Sensitive Data Manager leads the industry with 98% discovery accuracy and the lowest rates of false-positives and negatives. For instance, a large military defense contractor tested our solution against some of our biggest competitors. They were astounded to see that our solution identified numerous copies of highly sensitive data that the competitors missed.”
Post-Secondary Enterprise Solution
In the Post-Secondary Enterprise Solution category, Spirion’s success in the higher education market demonstrated how our software can handle any number of data discovery and classification challenges with structured and unstructured data. Higher education institutions must manage and secure large amounts of student data to comply with regulations such as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). From class records to financial aid applications, student data can travel to multiple departments, servers, and endpoints, within an institution.
“Spirion Sensitive Data Manager was recently deployed to improve Illinois College’s data privacy program and to comply with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which governs how colleges and universities effectively collect, store, use, and safeguard sensitive financial records that contain students and their guardian’s PII.”
Marc Brenner, Assistant Chief Information Officer at Illinois College, said, “Spirion provided full visibility into where all of our sensitive data lived, surfacing PII, bank account, and confidential budget information in hard-to-find files located on several computers…From there, we were able to define and automate protection options for the data. Knowing the location of the data allowed us to take necessary remediation actions, including electronically shredding unnecessary information while securing the data we still needed to use.”
Spirion’s hallmark data discovery engine powered this process. Our data discovery capabilities make it easier for organizations to classify their sensitive data and secure it. Only when all of an organization’s data can be found can a company truly know if it is complying with current and new data privacy regulations such as the GDPR, CCPA, and NY SHIELD Act.
Governance, Risk, and Compliance Solution
In the Governance, Risk, and Compliance, category, Spirion earned a Silver award for its ability to adapt to a business operation for any discovery or classification task associated with sensitive data.
“The real issue, however, isn’t about avoiding regulatory non-compliance; it’s about preventing a breach of the trust granted to you by your colleagues, your customers, and your community. Companies at the forefront of effective data compliance and vulnerability management prioritize their limited resources to find and protect what matters the most—sensitive and personal identifying information.”

About Spirion
“Protecting what matters most” means finding the sensitive data in an organization and classifying it correctly so that organizations can institute the proper safeguards with the data. A Gartner Peer Review summed it up best, “A multi-billion-dollar cybersecurity consultant called Spirion a “must-have tool for data compliance and regulations,” explaining, “I have worked on lots of data security tools, but I think Spirion is one of the tools which provides best-in-class data discovery capabilities with classification features as well.”
