Despite these words being sung by a troubadour who is probably still using a typewriter to pen his lyrics, their meaning could never be truer than now regarding data security breaches. Just this week a $3.1 million class action suit was levied against Community Health Systems for a 2014 breach. In addition, electronic health records vendor Greenway Health was hit by the Department of Justice with a $57.25 million fine under the False Claims Acts regarding HITECH compliance and Aetna was sanctioned by California for yet another fine of $935,000 for breaching HIV information.
With the average cost of a data breach in 2018 set at $3.86 million according to the IBM/Ponemon report, it would seem that all organizations both large and small would begin employing protections for their sensitive data, whether at rest or in use. It could possibly be attributed to past sins and now all of these organizations have implemented solutions. One can only hope that this is the case.
